Japan FAQ

Here's some answers to questions you might have about Japan!

Q: What did you do in Japan?

A: I'm was at language school in Tokyo learning Japanese, but also ate a ton of quality food, travelled to Hokkaido, Kyushu, Miyagi Sendai, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Niigata more!

Q: Is Japan expensive?

A: I'd say it's cheap, especially  compared to the UK. Most meals cost ~1000yen, which is about £6. Hard pushed to get that in the UK. Rent in a shared house, very central location in Tokyo is about 65,000yen a month (for everything!) which is about £400. For tourists, flights are expensive but hotels are typically a good price.

Q: Whats the furry fandom like in Japan?

A: It's pretty cool! Here it's called ケモノ Kemono. There's lots of Japanese furries who are passionate, draw amazing art and have beautiful fursuits. There's also a strong foreign resident fur scene, with lots of visiting furs too!

Q: Are there meet ups?

A: There's Wolf Bar in Asakusa, bar tenders a guy in a wolf fursuit and will make you cocktails based on your fursona . A lot of meet ups are organised in secret LINE chats though it seems! There are cons though, like JMOF, OOOF and Kemocon. There's also Kemoket, a comic market, which really showed just how many lurker furs there are out there, it was packed compared to the cons!

Q: Akihabara though!!

A: I'd recommend Nakano Broadway! Not as busy and there's some really good things there!

Q: Which Conbini is best Conbini?

A: Hard question that! I often say my favourite is FamilyMart. But the others all have their highlights, of which I will mention when it's not nearly 4am (once again as I edit this page it is nearly 4am).

Q: What else did you get up to?

A: I did Taiko drum classes and even performed in the Asakusa Public Hall!

Q: What flights would you recommend for Japan?

A: It's tough at the moment since tourism is really booming post-covid to really know what the best bet is for flights. If you can afford it i'd hands down recommend a direct flight with ANA from London Heathrow, but those are silly pricey now compared to back when only students could enter. For my trips in 2015 and 2017 I used Lufthansa that involved changing flights in Germany which was pretty decent. These ones are good since the flight to Germany can be made from outside London, such as Manchester!
